Team- Great job with your circuit and hill drills this week! Who knew a minute for each drill would be so tiring. You did it. You used your mental strength to hold that plank for a minute. It’s all about mind power. Focus on a goal. Tell yourself you can do it. I am almost done. I remember that during the Austin Marathon at about mile 17 my hip locked up. It was painful but I didn’t want to quit the race. I continued to run as best I could. I would tell myself, “You can’t quit now…I have to finish what I started.” It was such a great feeling when I finished. Our mind is so powerful. Lately Raul, my marathon trainer, has been pushing my limits more than usual. He gives me these crazy pace goals that I say I can’t do. I walk up to the fast lane at the track after he gives me instructions and I say, Alright here I go…you can do this.” Seems like my little pep talks have been working because I have been able to keep the pace time he assigned to me. When I think all the hard work is over he tells me to run the last two laps faster. Are you serious! Raul says, “Just try and do your best to go faster!” It’s such a great feeling to report back to him that I achieved the pace or that I ran faster than my required pace time. I have learned that mentally you can find that extra burst of energy you need to go faster. Use your mind to help you finish what your started. Remember, I am just here to help support you through your journey but you have to do all the work and always believe in yourself.
Continue to work out in the heat but be careful because the over 100 degrees could cause heat related illnesses. If you fall under the following then you are high risk for heat related illness: older age, heart disease and diabetes. This week, I trained with a wet towel over my shoulders and it seemed to help me from overheating during the humid mornings or hot evenings. Drink a lot of water, wear sunscreen, wear breathable clothing and a cap. Articles: runningplanet, medicinenet.com and foundrysportsmedicine.com.
